Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

I havenโ€™t seen many older movies (from the 50s and 60s) but I have seen a few. The wonderful black & white Sci-Fi films with the robots, evil scientists, UFOs with that funky laser sound (which was used in this film) and so on. All of these motifs made it into this visually stunning film. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is fully stylized to mimic the older films and I really enjoyed this modern take on the older genre. Once the plot gets going you find the world is under attack by robots created by a mad scientist bend on destroying the world. (Gawd, I hate when that happens!) Enter Sky Captain to save the day. I enjoyed all the characters, their banter and how they fit in this film. There was a lot of action and tons of eye candy, whether it was big evil robots, alien fighters, massive cityscapes or death rays, they all had that old school feel to them. The plot was pretty simple but I didnโ€™t feel it really mattered. This seemed more like a tribute to a past genre then an attempt to raise the bar for storytelling. (Although visually the bar is clearly up a notch) This felt like a spectacle, like a film should feel. There was drama, action, romance, good guys, bad guys, gadgets, suspense and tons of eye candy. The reasons why I want to see a movie in a theatre instead of at home. Impressive, I enjoyed it. โญโญโญยพ
