I finally saw LOTR:RotK last night. Yes it is a wonderful film, full of action, great acting, wonderful sets etc. etc. In spite of that I still felt a little empty at the end of itโ€ฆ as Iโ€™m sure many who have read the books also feel. I donโ€™t want to rag on Jackson too much (grin) because he has created an incredible film, but some of the omissions and alternations (for brevity or whatever) I still thought were curious and sometimes disappointing. โญโญโญโญยฝ Iโ€™m sure the Extended version of RotK may address much of this but โ€“ who knows. Anywaysโ€ฆ some of the things (not all of which I noticedโ€ฆ):
-Elrond tent scene โ€“ never happened
-Frodo never abandoned Sam in the book
-the return to an unoccupied Shire
-Denethorโ€™s dramatic leap off of Minas Tirith

And the omissions:
-The Voice of Saruman
-Prince Imrahil
-Sam and Frodo at the Crossroads
-Ghan-buri-ghan
-The Mouth of Sauron
-The Houses of Healing

Ya.. obviously it canโ€™t all be included but the worst omission (IMHO) was how Saruman just disappeared. He is locked in the tower guarded by the Treebeard. Ok. Off we goโ€ฆ The whole confrontation with Gandalf was omitted. I found this very disappointing. Anywaysโ€ฆ it *was* a great film. And Iโ€™m picking at some little things. I like wizards and magicโ€ฆ it would have been nice to see it more represented in the film. I still hope it does well at the Oscars. Fantasy films never get their due at the Oscarsโ€ฆ hopefully this year will be different.
