I finally saw LOTR:RotK last night. Yes it is a wonderful film, full of action, great acting, wonderful sets etc. etc. In spite of that I still felt a little empty at the end of itโฆ as Iโm sure many who have read the books also feel. I donโt want to rag on Jackson too much (grin) because he has created an incredible film, but some of the omissions and alternations (for brevity or whatever) I still thought were curious and sometimes disappointing. โญโญโญโญยฝ Iโm sure the Extended version of RotK may address much of this but โ who knows. Anywaysโฆ some of the things (not all of which I noticedโฆ):
-Elrond tent scene โ never happened
-Frodo never abandoned Sam in the book
-the return to an unoccupied Shire
-Denethorโs dramatic leap off of Minas Tirith
And the omissions:
-The Voice of Saruman
-Prince Imrahil
-Sam and Frodo at the Crossroads
-Ghan-buri-ghan
-The Mouth of Sauron
-The Houses of Healing
Ya.. obviously it canโt all be included but the worst omission (IMHO) was how Saruman just disappeared. He is locked in the tower guarded by the Treebeard. Ok. Off we goโฆ The whole confrontation with Gandalf was omitted. I found this very disappointing. Anywaysโฆ it *was* a great film. And Iโm picking at some little things. I like wizards and magicโฆ it would have been nice to see it more represented in the film. I still hope it does well at the Oscars. Fantasy films never get their due at the Oscarsโฆ hopefully this year will be different.
